Dental Implants

What is an implant?
A dental implant is one way of replacing one or several missing teeth. An implant is a “root” device usually made of titanium that supports the artificial crown of the missing tooth. The “root” is placed within the bone and will fuse with the bone in time.

Who is a good candidate for a dental implant?
If you have overall good health, you can consider getting a dental implant. However, for dental implants to work, there must be enough bone in the jaw and the bone has to be strong enough to support the implant. In cases of bone loss, more bone needs to be added through bone graft procedures before the dental implant can be placed.

Orthodontic therapy

Orthodontics is a dental speciality that deals with the recognition, prevention, and treatment of conditions involving irregularities of the teeth, jaws, and face.

Invisalign

Over 2 million Invisalign patients are now smiling with confidence.

What is Invisalign?
It is the modern approach to straightening teeth, using a series of custom-made aligners created especially for you. These aligners are made of smooth and virtually invisible plastic that you simply wear over your teeth. The aligners are removable and you are provided with a new set approximately every two weeks. Wearing these aligners gently and gradually shifts your teeth into place and straightens your smile. There are no metal brackets or wires that are attached and the best part of it all is that no one will even know that you are straightening your teeth!

Who can benefit from Invisalign?
Invisalign can be the solution to all your orthodontic problems whether you are suffering from mild cases of crooked or protruding teeth, or even if you have more severe dental problems such as malocclusion, overbites, and underbites. Whether your teeth are widely gapped, overly crowded, or somewhere in between, Invisalign can be the solution to your problems.

Here, at Pearl Dental, we provide you with a consultation appointment, during which we discuss all your possible options for achieving your ideal smile.

It is very important to consider your lifestyle when trying to choose an ideal orthodontic treatment. We will gladly provide you with all the advantages and disadvantages of the different orthodontic options when considering your unique case.

Fixed and removable prosthodontics

Prosthodontics: include crowns, bridges, partial or full dentures, and veneers.

It is a field in dentistry that is responsible for replacing lost or broken teeth (i.e. crowns, bridges). Additionally, it enables the enhancement of the appearance of your smile aesthetically (i.e. Veneers).

The main causes of tooth loss are dental caries/cavities, and periodontal diseases. However, other factors such as accidents and trauma can also result in tooth loss. All these factors causing tooth loss will subsequently lead to the need of artificial replacement.

The field of prosthodontics is very vast and there are many options available to you.

Night guards

Nightguards are useful in treating nocturnal bruxism. Bruxism is defined by the clenching of the jaw and grinding of the teeth while asleep. Bruxism leads to attrition, which is the process of wearing away or wearing down the occlusal and incisal surfaces of the teeth due to the mechanical friction.

Nightguards are made up of resin or rubber (thermoplastic) and are worn to cover the occlusal and incisal surfaces of the teeth, in order to eliminate the damaging effects of nocturnal grinding of the teeth.

Nightguards are custom-fitted and are individually designed and made. We will first make an impression of your teeth and then your night guard is molded over the model to provide you with maximal comfort and protection.

You will need to come in for two sessions in order for us to provide you with a well fitted night guard. During the first session, we will take the impression of your teeth and on the second session, we will fit your night guard and make any necessary adjustments.

An effective nightguard should be comfortable, durable, and easy to clean. Wearing your night guard should help reduce muscle tension and allow you to get a better night’s sleep.

Oral cancer detection

Oral cancer is a deadly oral disease that is growing at an alarming rate. Oral Cancer’s mortality rate is higher than cervical and prostate cancer and kills one person every hour of every day.

On the bright side, the cure rates of oral cancer are 80 to 90% when detected during the early stages. However, the signs and symptoms of oral cancer are difficult to detect with the naked eye and the disease is often overlooked until later untreatable stages.

So what is the solution?

The solution is to screen for oral cancer on a routine basis in order to diagnose the onset of the disease during its early stages, while there is still a chance for a cure.

At Pearl Dental, we are proud to be part of the team of dentists, hygienists, and oral surgeons who are conscious and caring enough to look the problem in the eye and take action against it.

We now have the technology to detect oral cancer earlier and save lives, thanks to the Identafi® system. Identafi® technology allows us to detect and identify the biochemical and morphological changes in cells of the mouth, throat, tongue and tonsils in order to detect oral cancer.

Teeth extraction

Teeth may have to get extracted due to many reasons such as extensive decay, infection, abscess, breakage, and even preparation for other dental treatment plans such as orthodontic treatments.

Wisdom teeth are the most common teeth to get extracted because they are either impacted (failure to erupt above the gum line), or for the properly erupted ones to potentially become problematic. The fully erupted wisdom teeth can pose a potential threat if they cause infections due to entrapment of food debris, or cause misalignment, malocclusion, and/or crowding.

Tooth extractions can range from simple to complex depending on the number of roots, eruption stage, structure of the tooth, etc.

The general dentist will refer the patient to a specialist (Maxillofacial Surgeon) if the extraction is too complex.

Treatment of bad breath (Halitosis)

Halitosis can be caused by a variety of factors such as: certain foods, poor oral hygiene, systemic diseases, and certain medications that cause dry mouth like Antihistamines. Tobacco and alcohol can also be causal agents for dry mouth and subsequently bad breath.

Some helpful strategies in dealing with bad breath are simply to avoid certain foods such as spicy foods, visiting your dental office regularly for cleaning appointments, and improving your daily oral health practices.

Tips for improving your daily oral health practices:

  • Brush and floss regularly.
  • Rinse mouth with water after eating, when brushing is not possible.
  • Use alcohol-free mouthwashes.
  • Chew sugar-free xylitol containing gums.
  • Cease or reduce smoking and alcohol consumption.
  • Consume fruits and vegetables such as apples and celery to help remove food debris from the oral cavity.

X-rays

Dental radiographs (x-rays) are very crucial diagnostic and preventative measures that allow your dentist and your dental hygienist to detect abnormalities and oral diseases that are not otherwise visible during clinical examination.

Taking x-rays is crucial in finding cavities in certain areas, detecting bone loss, abnormal growths, oral cancer, tooth impactions, etc.

The amount of radiation that you are exposed to is kept minimal and within the safe range. Your dentist and hygienist are trained to take necessary precautions such as shielding your body with the lead apron, as to avoid any possible adverse affects.

At Pearl Dental, we are proud to be equipped with digital x-ray machines, which minimize the amount of x-ray that you are exposed to. Our clinic is equipped with the Panorex and Cephalometric x-ray machines as well.

Full mouth series x-rays are recommended for new patients and bite-wing x-rays are routinely done during your usual recall (check up) appointments once or twice a year. The number of x-rays recommended for each patient depends on their individual dental
